Update on Asbestos Claims in the United States

Some 6,000 claims were filed against CertainTeed in 2007, versus 7,000 in 2006. Around 8,000 claims were resolved over the period, bringing the number of outstanding claims to 74,000 at December 31st, 2007, compared with 76,000 at end-2006. A total of USD 73 million indemnity payments were paid over the last 12 months, compared to USD 83 million over 2006.

In light of these trends, an additional provision of €90 million was recorded in 2007 (versus €95 million in 2006), increasing the total coverage for CertainTeed's asbestos-related claims to USD 473 million at December 31st, 2007, compared to USD 451 million at end-2006.
