Vertical Sliders
The
WHS Halo System 10 Conservation Vertical
Slider has been used as part of a renovation project to preserve a listed
building, providing sheltered accommodation for residents in Cambridge.
Nearly
200 Conservation Vertical Sliders were installed alongside 479 casement
windows in Ditchburn Place; a former maternity hospital converted in 1986
into a mixed housing development and now registered as a listed property.
When the windows needed replacing, Cambridge City Council approached WHS
Halo System 10 for a conservation-sensitive solution, as Mike Stevenson,
Marketing Director for WHS Halo, explains:
The age and character of Ditchburn Place posed a challenge as the
replacement windows could not alter or detract from the building's architectural
appeal. Our Conservation Vertical Slider has been specifically designed
for instances just like this and presented the perfect solution, as, visually,
it offers an authentic alternative to timber sliding sash windows, whilst
offering all the low-maintenance benefits of PVC-U. The client is delighted
and despite having new windows, the building has not been changed and
retains its special interest.
The System 10 Conservation Vertical Slider takes the defining features
of the traditional timber design to match the aesthetic appeal but with
superior performance. Weights and pulleys have been replaced by sophisticated
but robust spring and spiral balances, and a unique tilt facility enables
safe cleaning of sashes from the inside.
The window features traditional front to back profile dimensions to match
existing box arrangements as well as authentic 'straight through' horn
and hardware arrangements.
The outer frame and sash joints have a 'staff bead' and Mortise and Tenon
appearance, and the deep bottom rail, plain travel stops and plain Georgian
bar complete the very specific exterior appearance.
