Profile 22's RCM Reinforcement Secures BSI Stamp of Approval

Profile 22's new recycled composite material (RCM) reinforcement has secured BSi 7412 recognising its suitability as a replacement for steel or aluminium reinforcements in a wide variety of PVC-U window applications.

The new RCM reinforcement is the latest innovation from Profile 22. Introduced to all PVC-U window and door ranges, available for outer frame and window sash profile, including white and wood grain finishes, RCM is manufactured from post-consumer waste PVC-U, closing the loop on the recycling process.

Already the only product of its type to secure approval by the Government backed Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) in its guide to recycled content in construction products, RCM has now added the industry standard to its list of accreditations, also including the security rating BS 7950.

Rob McGlennon, divisional sales director at Profile 22, said: ‘The use of RCM not only brings waste material back into use but by replacing steel and aluminium sections in the window construction process it delivers a wide range of benefits.

‘Lighter, they make windows easier to carry and install, reducing health and safety issues associated with lifting weights.

‘As a PVC-U product RCM doesn't corrode or oxidise, therefore there is no risk of rusty swarf deposits post drilling. And because it can be welded, it can increase corner weld strength by 20 per cent, while also delivering a greater screw pull out value than steel.’

Not only are RCM reinforcements fully recyclable but as an integral part of an advanced performance window they also make it easier to deliver higher window energy efficiency ratings. RCM is an excellent insulator, with a rating of -0.17 W/mk compared to 50W/mk for steel and 160W/mk for aluminium. Final window ratings depend on the combination of frame and glass chosen but by replacing steel with RCM, insulation is improved and conductivity is reduced making it easier to achieve a higher energy efficiency rating at lower production cost.

Rob added: ‘RCM delivers a host of benefits to the manufacturing and fitting process through to improved energy efficiency importance. ‘It's one of a number of new innovations developed by Profile 22 to support fabricators and installers maximise their profit and make the most of opportunities in a developing market.’
