'Titan'
- The Mean Green Monster Machine
Dekura, the PVC-U
recycler has unveiled its new post-consumer waste processing machine -
'Titan'.
Fully
accredited and a member of Recovinyl, Dekura is at the forefront of PVC-U
recycling innovation and collects waste from more than 1,000 window and
door fabricators nationwide.
As more and more first-generation PVC-U windows are being replaced with
new advanced products, the industry is keen to find ways of reducing the
amount of waste PVC-U going to landfill and in turn, improving its green
credentials.
With an established network of recycling centres nationwide, Dekura's
new Birmingham-based operation is dedicated to handling and processing
'old' post-consumer waste through its specialist size-reduction facilities.
For this unique service, Dekura has developed 'Titan', a purpose-built
monster PVC-U processing line - capable of shredding an old PVC-U door
in just 15 seconds.
Tony Moore, general manager, Dekura, said: Titan is a beast of a
machine. It's incredibly powerful and can chew up and spit out old doors
and windows in seconds. It forms part of our dedicated post-consumer recycling
operation.
With the capacity to recycle not only post-industrial but post-consumer
waste, Dekura is playing a major role in helping fabricators and installers
address their green credentials.
Research suggests that the vast majority, as many as 300,000 per year,
of old early generation PVC-U windows are still going to landfill.
Dekura
has made recycling post-consumer waste easy, developing a specially designed
and patented post-consumer green trolley system. This, like its post-industrial
cages, can be left with larger fabricators free of charge and collected,
weekly or fortnightly, depending on the volumes of post-consumer waste
they generate.
The green trolleys have been designed to handle a range of old PVC-U fascias,
soffits, rainwater goods and windows, providing glass has been removed
from them first.
Dekura offers full cycle traceability on all waste material, including
post-consumer waste. This allows fabricators and installers, particularly
those within the commercial market, to demonstrate an actual and auditable
commitment to the recycling of waste material.
Tony said: Fabricators and installers are not only under mounting
pressure to increase the amount of waste product they recycle but also
face spiralling disposal costs.
PVC-U landfill costs are currently between £40 and £100
per tonne and tax alone is expected to rise from £24 per tonne to
around £48 per tonne by 2011. Add this to average yearly skip hire
costs of around £20,000 and businesses are losing a substantial
chunk out of their profit margins.
It is not just a matter of saving money though. More and more, businesses
are being asked to demonstrate that they are handling their waste responsibly.
Tony added: Dekura's multi-million pound investment into recycling
post-consumer waste means we can now offer a value-added service to our
customers in the trade, helping them to not only save on their landfill
costs but to strengthen their own green credentials.
The reality is that waste management is an important issue whatever
sector you're in and it is critical to take advantage of the new opportunities
that recycling and a sustainable approach to your business can create.
