Merritt Makes PVC-U Disposal Easy

Disposal of waste PVC-U products is now even easier for installers and builders, working in both the domestic and social housing sectors, with a sustainable and cost-effective solution from Derbyshire-based plastic recycler Merritt Plastics.

By recycling, rather than landfilling old window and door frames, window companies not only save on escalating disposal costs, but they can even receive prompt payment for the waste, including post-production off-cuts.

Installers taking their waste de-glazed frames direct to the Ilkeston company will receive prompt payment against the Merritt weighbridge ticket. This offers considerable savings on the unattractive and increasingly-expensive landfill option.

For larger projects, such as major social housing refurbishment schemes, Merritt can supply 50 cubic yard roll on-off skips on site for removed de-glazed frames. These are collected and waste PVC-U is recycled at Merritt's high volume trade extrusion facility into new plastic building products.

'With the market growing for replacement of replacements and increasing pressure on the industry to recover and minimise waste, the responsible disposal of post-consumer PVC-U waste is an issue that installers just cannot overlook,' says Simon Readman, Managing Director of Merritt Plastics.

'It's not just the environment that benefits. With landfill costs currently between £40 and £100 per tonne, installers not only save on disposal costs, but receive payment for their waste frames. It can also boost business for them by actively demonstrating their 'green' credentials to increasingly eco-conscious consumers.'

Established in 1995, Merritt Plastics is an integrated PVC recycler reprocessing up to 400 tonnes of waste each month into new plastic building products at its 60,000 sq ft recycling, manufacturing and extrusion site. As an accredited member of Recovinyl, the PVC industry's recycling initiative, Merritt provides a fully traceable and audited record on all waste material. This allows installers, particularly those within the commercial market, to demonstrate their auditable commitment to waste recycling.

Simon adds: 'Industry figures suggest as many as 300,000 old PVC-U windows are currently being buried in the ground, wasting both money and a valuable resource. Recycling is the sustainable and compelling option, both environmentally and economically, for all.' For more information, contact Merritt Plastics on 01159 447661.
