MagHansen
Systems Shield The Tun
An
unusual combination of standard and bespoke curtain walling systems
by MagHansen have been employed in enclosing a converted brewery building
which stands close by the new Scottish Parliament.
Known simply as The Tun, the high profile development by Whiteburn Holyrood
now provides space for the BBC, The British Council and other business
tenants as well as being a popular leisure destination with the population
of Edinburgh.
While MagHansens popular Parallel curtain walling has been
employed to enclose the bar, café and restaurant used by thousands
of visitors, other elements to the designs of Allan Murray Architects
allowed the manufacturer to demonstrate its capabilities to the full.
The main elevation to The Tun in fact features a 20 metre tall, sloping
installation of structural glazing; rising the full five storey height
of the building. This has been executed by MagHansen utilising insulating
glass units containing toughened glass spanning floor to floor between
bespoke Aluminium Transom.
Then pre-patinated copper cassette panels (cross purchased from another
supplier) present a visually striking and extremely weather resistant
cladding to the side elevations. The Fasad system is incorporated
into the refurbished retained brick façade.
A spokesperson for the project team commented: The Tun has been
very well received as a commercial and leisure development, and as an
addition to the architecture of the area. MagHansen has made a full
contribution to the appearance of the building with its different glazing
and curtain walling systems, overcoming many technical challenges in
the process.
