Quietguard Develops Patented Elastomer Roofing Technology

Quietguard Ltd, based in North Wales has for over two years been in development of a Patented Elastomer Roofing Technology that can dramatically reduce the effect of noise from rain and hail hitting roofing made from polycarbonate sheeting. Quietguard's Inventor and Managing Director Anthony Burden said: ‘It's a simple but effective technology offering conservatory owners a new product to enhance their investment for both new or existing structures’.

Polycarbonate, probably the most popular form of roofing material used within the conservatory industry has played a big part in bringing down the cost of conservatories to affordable prices. Polycarbonate is a very tough material and has proven performance benefits but a common issue using this material is its hardness, it can act as a drum skin especially if the most popular 10 or 16mm thicknesses are used, hence the term ‘drumming effect’. Prospective conservatory purchasers are more aware of this effect and often look for the more expensive glass roofing systems to try and eliminate or mitigate intrusive noise pollution.

One method of reducing the noise effect with polycarbonate has been to increase the thickness of the sheet from the popular 10mm and 16mm section, to 35mm and even 60mm thickness. The thicker sections require different fixture systems, still suffer noise issues and result in higher costs due to thicker roofing systems and associated fitting costs.

‘Our technology works by effectively suppressing the energy of the rain/hail before it can transmit through the polycarbonate surface as sound,’ says Anthony. ‘By applying a soft, thin profiled high performance rubber elastomer sheet effectively reduces this noise. The rubber elastomer has an adhesive backing to it and we intend distributing this product as a rubber tape or tile that can be fitted on a roof at the manufacturing stage of a conservatory, or as a retro fit for existing customers wanting to improve their investment as either professionally fitted or in a DIY format.

‘Our unique product benefits also include a reduction in roof surface temperature resulting from direct sunlight, the elastomer rubber material is very poor at conducting heat. In addition our product does not shrink, grow algae and is not effected by UV degradation which clearly enhances and protects the customers investment.’

The elastomer can be supplied in any colour, translucent or opaque, bronze or white and can fit to any surface including glass. Ongoing product development includes the use of coloured photo chromic prototypes which can vary the shade from semi translucent to opaque, so the stronger the sunlight the darker the shade effectively acting as an automatic sunblind. Further developments include the use of thermo chromic and electro chromic being either heat or electrically driven.

Quietguard continues to develop this product and is actively looking for a partner, if you like further information please contact anthony@quietguard.co.uk.
