Blink - The Glass with the High IQ

Glass UK is bringing another new product development to market that the company says puts it further ahead in the intelligent glass technology field. Called 'Blink', the key component is a liquid crystal polymer that transforms a glass panel from transparent to opaque (translucent) and can also display a presentation or video projection simply by switching an electrical current on and off.

Blink brings a host of new display dimensions, security and flexibility to both commercial and domestic applications.

For a start, in its opaque state, high definition images can be rear-projected onto it making Blink an invaluable addition in conference rooms and presentation theatres. In the same way, the glass can also be used for information displays and advertisements by retail outlets and stores as well as a television/video screen in residential properties.

Alternatively, it can be used as apparently normal transparent glazing for windows and doors, with all the advantages of normal light levels, yet at the flick of a switch Blink becomes opaque creating a highly secure and private environment, safe from prying eyes.

Blink uses a 110v current, and has a response time between On and Off of less than 1 second. Available in a colour range of white, blue, green and bronze, this new product has wide appeal right across the commercial and domestic markets.

Blink can also be controlled via a 12v RF switch on a keyfob to switch the LCD on / off. This 12v option opens up other opportunities both to use Blink as part of mobile displays, and with a dimmer switch to gradually turn the LCD from clear to opaque.

This technology can be applied to curved surfaces and, where required, can be produced in custom shaped and sized panels. Furthermore, simply by applying a reflective mirror film to the LCD film surface, it can then be used as a front-projection screen.

‘This is a very exciting development,’ said Neil Sharda, General Manager of Glass UK, ‘but at the same time typical of the way Glass UK constantly seeks to bring the best and most innovative offerings to its customers.

‘There's no doubt, Blink has tremendous potential, combining new technology with existing materials to produce outstanding performance. Its strength, durability, and ease of installation all combine to make this another winner for Glass UK.’

PA-LA (polymer assembled-liquid crystal) is a new technology that is applied between two ITO films and then sandwiched between two pieces of standard float glass. Its similarity to normal laminated glass is such that it can be installed in exactly the same way.

Panel sizes can be customised by Glass UK and they can be installed in multiple panels, providing effective room dividers or as glazed windows or walls. They offer high UV protection (98%) and comply with all current safety legislation.
