Glassex 2005 Review: Part 1

Masterframe Scores again at Glassex 2005

'Glassex 2005 was a great success for us,’ says Alan Burgess, Managing Director of Masterframe Windows Ltd, the manufacturer of high-quality PVC-U sliding sash windows. ‘We pulled out all the stops for our 14th consecutive year at the show, which should prove to be our best Glassex so far.

‘Fully working samples from each of our collections meant everyone could see the attention to detail that goes into making each and every window perfect, and at a price point to match client expectations. The Bygone Collection, for example, features white foiled woodgrain, branded hardware and continuous horns as standard. Showing the Bygone Collection opens so many doors, especially as conservation officers are unable to reject it on its looks. A plasma screen showed visitors the Masterframe factory in action, with giant exhibition screens debunking the myths about vertical sliders beside it.

‘Every visitor to our stand also had the opportunity to win two VIP tickets for the first England friendly in the new Wembley stadium right next to the Royal Box. We received a large number of entries and there was quite a crowd to witness the draw on Wednesday, with Dean Grice, Manager of Stafford UPVC Windows announced the winner.

‘When you rely on just one product to sell, it’s important to stand out from the competition. We needed a strong presence and the reaction of visitors to the stand said it all. It’s especially important when clients from competitors say their current supplier quality or service is letting them down, and are ready to try a new company.

‘Leads and appointments requested are up on last year, and there was much interest from installers wishing to join the BPI network – demonstrating that when a supplier works to improve its clients businesses, it secures a long term working partnership. Having access to the Bygone Collection window and exploiting the biggest untapped market in the industry also helps.

‘I’m already excited about next year’s show!’

K2 Glass/Celsius Performance Glass Triumphs at Glassex

K2 Glass, the UK supplier of thermal performance glass for conservatory roofs enjoyed great success at Glassex 2005, where the company demonstrated the advantages of its technically advanced range with an inventive 'heat tunnel' display.

Visitors to the K2 Glass stand enjoyed walking through the 'K2 Glass heat tunnel'; which was specially designed to incorporate polycarbonate, standard glass and Celsius glass fitted at intervals throughout its length. Heat lamps were placed behind each section of the tunnel and visitors were able to experience the 'Celsius effect'; a noticeably cooler environment than that provided by standard glass or polycarbonate.

Comments Managing Director of K2 Glass, Dave Bradshaw: 'We received as many enquiries during the first two days of Glassex as we did during the entire show at our last appearance in 2003 and by the end of the show had dealt with more than double the amount of customers.

'We found that visitors to the stand really enjoyed personally experiencing the differences in temperature between standard glass, polycarbonate and thermal performance Celsius glass. This personal experience of the product, combined with our 'customer pledge' of faxback quotations on new orders within 15 minutes and delivery of the order within 5-7 working days, demonstrated to visitors that we offer both high quality products and excellent service and attracted a lot of positive feedback and interest throughout the show.'

GTI Kombimatec at Glassex 2005

'We are delighted to say that Glassex, once again, generated an excellent level of enquiries with actual orders taken at the show. It felt like attendance was up on the previous year and the visitors to our stand knew what they were looking for: - the right machines to improve their efficiency and increase output.' says GTI Kombimatec.

'We attribute our success to being able to deliver to customers what they need and want; affordable, reliable machinery particularly focusing on increasing production in the manufacture of internally glazed PVC windows.

'The New Kombimatec 1HDX Cruciform Welder highlights the fact and was indeed the star of this years show. Designed and developed in Luton for the UK market, customers were able to see the benefits of cutting their profiles once, joining the four pieces simultaneously to produce the cross and cleaning in one final operation. Unlike the traditional method of creating a cruciform joint there is now no need to V-notch, re-weld and re-clean thus saving production time and providing an improved finish.

'British made Kombimatec machines bring great benefits to fabricators of UK style windows and this was demonstrated on the stand by the EV470 CNC corner, transom and cruciform cleaner. Considerably more cost effective than its European rivals, without compromising on quality or cycle times, the EV470 was the first of its type to enter the market in 2000 and boasts an extensive customer reference list. Designed to be easy to use and maintain this CNC cleaner has no problems with ovolo shapes internally and externally or pre-rolled and co-extruded gaskets as are more prevalent in today's modern systems.

'The well-established Kombimatec welders have been made at the Luton factory since 1984 and are known for their ease of operation and reliability. The 4HDV Four Head model is unique due to its flexibility of operation and the speed at which one can change from corner to transom welding.

'Also on display and running was the DGS530 Electronic double Mitre Saw. This popular model has no practical minimum cut size, which is a boon for the UK fabricator. With the ability to read pre-optimised cutting lists using a floppy disk the owner saves money through a reduction in profile wastage via batch optimisation and less re-makes due to increased cutting accuracy.

'We certainly have our work cut out following up the show leads but are already looking forward to next years Glassex.'

4 Days on and Still ‘Smilin’!

Echoing the theme on the Newdawn Stand of ‘Four Decades On & We`re Still Groovin’ the stand staff were still ‘smilin’ after four long days under the lights at Glassex.

Numbers down but business up down under – was the slightly confusing message from the Newdawn stand, with a slight drop in visitor numbers recorded on two of the four days the event was still hailed as a major success with orders taken on the stand for 250 roof kits from a major new account, the expansion of the Sunwood distribution network to cover Scotland and Northern Ireland and the appointment of a new Australian distributor who was so impressed with what he saw at the show he visited the Alcester factory the following day on his way to Heathrow and signed up immediately to join the growing number of Newdawn outlets ‘down under.’

Still ‘smilin’ from the left Greg Beachim, Alan Cockayne, Louise Clarke and Andrew Buglass.

Commenting on the show Alan Cockayne, Newdawn National Sales Manager said, ‘To have continuously traded for four decades was worth celebrating and our decision to once again have a stand at Glassex has been fully vindicated. Newdawn continues to successfully recruit new fabricators, expand our kit production business and develop the Newera and Sunwood ranges. It is business as usual following the reorganisation of the past few months - the company is now leaner, fitter and more able to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing market which could provide some interesting opportunities in the near future for co-operation and joint venture – shifting alliances and the prospect of major developments make the coming year one which will see new forces emerging and the future direction of our industry more clearly defined.’

Happy Holidays with CWG

Excitement was high on the Corby Windows Group stand at Glassex on the last afternoon when the draw was made for the Holiday of a Lifetime Competition featured via the company’s Outlook newsletter prior to and during the show. Jim Hay, managing director of Glassex organisers Emap Maclaren made the draw ably assisted by CWG’s managing director Jason Wilder & chief executive Dennis Marrison.

The winner is Paul Lucas, an installer from Bedfordshire. He was still at the show and was able to come to the stand. He said, ‘It’s unbelievable, and my wife didn’t believe me either. In the end, CWG’s area sales manager John Sharpe had to speak to her before she was convinced but now she’s delighted’.

The holiday, with the compliments of CWG and in association with Virgin Holidays, is a two week all inclusive stay at a luxury hotel on the beautiful island of Mauritius. Paul and his wife Karen, hope to fly out during April.

Paul is an existing customer of the Corby Windows Group and installs up to ten frames from them each week. He explained, ‘I’ve bought from CWG for over two years and have been very pleased. We are a relatively small installer and need to know we are getting deliveries on time. In spite of our size, nothing seems to be too much trouble and though I know they supply much larger companies than mine, they still bend over backwards to make sure I’ve got what I need when I need it’.
